Axis/ASI Participates in Homeland Security Active Shooter Drill
New York, NY, December 3, 2015 – ASI Security (a division of Axis Global Enterprises) was selected to participate in a massive active shooter response training drill conducted in cooperation with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the New York Fire Department (NYFD), and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Sunday, November 22, 2015 in a New York City subway station.
Coordinated and funded by the DHS, the 3-hour comprehensive exercise was an effort to evaluate the city’s preparedness in the event of an active shooter attack and test the effectiveness of technologies to aid in such events. This was the first such test for two new units within the NYPD: the Critical Response Command, which is comprised of 500+ trained counterterrorism officers, and the 800-strong Strategic Response Group.
Like many sublevel transportation systems, the station used for the experiment did not have reliable cell phone coverage, proving that the ability to immediately report a shooting when it occurred was critical to first responders. Without the Guardian system as the primary source of information, the ability to effectively communicate critical information to the NYPD would have been limited to only those who were physically able to escape the shooter. The experiment provided valuable information, as it further illustrated that in an active shooter scenario, real time, factual information provided to law enforcement and people at the site is critical to saving lives.
“We were honored to participate in this massive training alongside the DHS, NYPD and NYFD,” said Ross Vierra, CEO and President of Axis Global Enterprises. “In active shooter situations, the everyday communication devices that we’ve grown so dependent upon, often become nonexistent. The Guardian system is completely functional in this type of environment. Not only did this exercise prove the system’s functionality, but it also demonstrated the ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with integrated technologies, allowing first responders to arrive on the scene more quickly and with better information. The bottom line is this – shooter detection systems save lives.”
